TWO GRAVES is a new Netflix series from Spain (org. title: Dos tumbas). It’s a thriller, crime, drama, and mystery series in terms of genres. When it comes to the core plot, however, it’s more about revenge. Plain and simple.

As with any good story, there are some twists and turns along the way to keep things interesting. What I love about many Spanish productions (and South Korean, for that matter) is that all the characters tend to be neither entirely good nor bad. Everyone has a little bit of both – although there are obviously different reasons for “bad” behavior.

Don’t mess with Grandma

For most of its runtime, the Two Graves limited series is very much about Isabel (Kiti Mánver). She’s a grandma, and her beloved granddaughter is one of two girls who suddenly disappear.

However, this series isn’t about the crime that leads to their disappearance. I mean, you will find out exactly what happened on that fateful night before the end of episode 3.

In the meantime, it’s much more about how Grandma Isabel wants to avenge her granddaughter.

Not having answers is breaking her down bit by bit. The fact that the father of the other missing girl is a known gangster doesn’t even deter Isabel from going after him as well. She has no limits. At all.

Anyone she suspects has answers will come to feel this.

Two Graves – Review | Netflix Mystery Thriller Mini Series

The double-edged sword of vengeance

The title of this Spanish limited series refers to a proverb usually attributed to Confucius (including in this series), but the origin is very much debated. Wherever it comes from, the saying goes: “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

And yes, Isabel will also learn that her quest for vengeance will hurt her as much as anyone she goes after. Admittedly, I loved seeing this Grandma, who everyone underestimates, never backing down.

However, as mentioned initially, in this Spanish limited series, no one is entirely good or completely bad. Or, well, there are some bad guys that I would say are very much bad. My point is simply that we tend to see the darkness in everyone.

So many heartfelt performances

If there’s one thing stories of revenge are usually good for, it’s delivering heartfelt storylines, which in turn means performances that can be both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

While it may not seem like it at first, Two Graves does manage to deliver both.

Not least thanks to its wonderful cast, led by Kiti Mánver as Isabel. Fans of iconic Spanish director Pedro Almodovar will likely recognize her from movies such as Broken Embraces (2009) or Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988).

Also, delivering a lot of the heart to the story are Nadia Vilaplana, Zoe Arnao, and Nonna Cardoner. Three young talents who each have to ensure you get invested in the story.

In other key roles, you’ll see a few faces familiar from Spanish genre productions. These include Álvaro Morte (Immaculate, Mirage, Money Heist), Salva Reina (Marshland), Carlos Scholz (Feria: The Darkest Light), and Hovik Keuchkerian (The Platform 2).

Watch Two Graves on Netflix now

The Two Graves Netflix mini series was created by Agustín Martínez (Feria: The Darkest Light). The director and executive producer of the series is Goya Award winner Kike Maíllo (Alma: The Girl in the Mirror).

While Agustín Martínez is the creator, the scripts for the three episodes of this Spanish Netflix series (org. title Dos tumbas) come from writers Jorge Díaz and Antonio Mercero, members of the writing collective Carmen Mola.

I love that this mini series has just three episodes, as it allows you to break it up, if you need to, but also enables you to watch it as one long movie. Had this been a South Korean production, it would just have been one fairly long movie.

However you decide to watch Two Graves, make sure you do so. It’s a strong revenge story, and I am admittedly a sucker for those!

Two Graves is out on Netflix globally from August 29, 2025.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
