FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN on Netflix is a classic High School Slasher horror movie. Nothing new, but still good fun. Also, the 1980s setting makes for a great soundtrack and retro outfits. Read our full Fear Street: Prom Queen movie review here!

FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN is a new Netflix horror movie. While this one is part of the Fear Street family, it’s a stand-alone movie. In other words, it still takes place in the same universe, but the characters are new as is the story.

The second part of Fear Street was in 1978 >

Finally, Part 3 of took place in 1666 and tied them all together >

This new movie in the franchise has a runtime of just 1 hour and 28 minutes. While there is nothing new, which does make it feel a bit (too!) formulaic, it’s still a very entertaining horror slasher that just might attract the next generation of horror fans to our beloved genre.

Shadyside High 1988 Prom Queen

Fear Street: Prom Queen is essentially about surviving the nomination for Prom Queen at Shadyside High’s 1988 prom. In the days leading up to prom, it’s not fun being the underdog, Lori Granger (India Fowler).

Of course, this has more to do with past events involving her mom and dad. I won’t get into it here to avoid spoilers.

In any case, what we’ll soon realize (but no one else will for quite some time) is that someone is killing off the candidates. And these “eliminations” are happening in extremely bloody slasher fashion with lots of delicious practical effects. Points for that. Always!

What plays out in Fear Street: Prom Queen is a very classic slasher movie set in a High School world. There really isn’t much innovation, but in our retro-loving world, this is probably a good thing.

Also, while this Netflix horror isn’t great, it is good slasher fun.

Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) – Review | Netflix Slasher Movie

Underdogs, outsiders, and a Wolfpack of It Girls

With the story set in High School, we’re also getting the typical character gallery of underdogs, outsiders, and the It Girls with their jock boyfriends. In Fear Street: Prom Queen, the pack of It Girls is called the “Wolfpack”.

Understandably so, I might add.

This almost means we’re getting a rather huge ensemble cast. After all, having teenagers in the lead also means we’re seeing their parents and teachers, so many familiar faces are in the cast.

The Fear Street: Prom Queen killer ensemble cast is led by India Fowler (The Strangers: Chapter 1, White Lines) as the lead character, Lori Granger. She looks like the love child of Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) and Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us).

A winning combination for a horror lead in my book.

Also among the teens are Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls), Ariana Greenblatt (65, Love and Monsters), Ella Rubin (Until Dawn), and David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives).

In the adult section of the cast, you can look forward to Lili Taylor (The Conjuring, Outer Range), Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant, Afraid), and Chris Klein (American Pie).

While Leigh Janiak wrote and directed the three movies in the first Fear Street trilogy of 2021, this new stand-alone movie comes from director Matt Palmer (Calibre). He also co-wrote Fear Street: Prom Queen with Donald McLeary.

Also, it is worth noting that Leigh Janiak is still onboard as a producer on this latest movie in the franchise. Of course, all the Fear Street Netflix movies are based on R.L. Stine’s popular series.

However, Prom Queen is actually the first one from a specific book, 1992’s “The Prom Queen”. So, if you’re in the mood for a well-made, entertaining, and fun horror slasher (and who isn’t?!), then check it out on Netflix now.

It’s not a new cult classic in my book, but I still enjoyed it and want to recommend it.

Fear Street: Prom Queen is on Netflix from May 23, 2025.

Plot

Who will be voted queen at Shadyside High’s 1988 prom? For underdog Lori, competition is cutthroat even before someone starts killing off the candidates.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
