SCURRY is a new horror movie featuring an apocalyptic event with monsters. This is a strong creature feature with few weak spots. Unfortunately, they happen in the final act, which is a real shame. Still, you’ll want to check it out. Read our full Scurry horror movie review here to find out why!

SCURRY is a horror movie coming out on digital and in a limited theatrical run. If you can find a screening, it’s definitely the kind of movie you’ll want to watch on the big screen. After all, this is an apocalyptic horror movie!

The runtime is right around 100 minutes, and the movie plays out in real-time underground as we follow two strangers trying to survive. Unfortunately, the tagline is “They Come From Below”, so the monsters are there with them.

Welcome to the apocalypse

Scurry being with an attack that we don’t fully see or have any chance of understanding. A man (Jamie Costa) wakes up at the bottom of what looks like a sinkhole in the middle of a city road.

He believes an earthquake has happened, as they have been happening very frequently in recent weeks. Very soon, he finds himself forced to crawl deeper underground, where he will soon meet a woman (Emalia).

The two strangers are now trapped beneath the chaos happening upstairs. A chaos she managed to witness, while he still hasn’t wrapped his head around the fact that no earthquake happened.

They come from below… but what are “they”?

His focus on earthquakes will soon change, as he discovers something is underground with them. The strangers are both wounded and disoriented, but have to keep moving through narrow underground tunnels.

Why are there tunnels, you may wonder? Well, what you should be asking yourself is what made these tunnels that are big enough for people to crawl around in?

Something huge and skilled at living underground would be all you need to know.

What follows is a very claustrophobic horror experience where any hope is quickly squashed… but giving up is not an option!

Scurry – Review | One-shot Apocalypse Horror Sci-fi

The power of real-time horror

I love that Scurry plays out in real-time as it lends an intensity (and, let’s be honest, stressful experience) to watching it. Admittedly, I am an even bigger fan of one-shot horror movies, but those are truly a crazy endeavor.

In any case, the monster element of Scurry is the star, and that works brilliantly. The monsters bringing about the actual apocalypse are huge insects that reminded me of both spiders (but with just six legs) and also crabs, somehow.

Trust me, the creatures are scary by their size alone, but being trapped underground with them is where the real horror kicks in.

For the vast majority of the runtime, we have just two characters to follow: A man and a woman. They do not know each other, and while the man wants to team up with the woman, she is all about surviving… not being a team player.

You can’t really blame her – and, to be fair, he doesn’t – but it does seem smarter to work together in their situation.

Watch Scurry on digital

Luke Sparke is the director of Scurry, which premiered at the 2024 Sydney Film Festival. Made as a real-time horror movie with a one-shot feel, this apocalyptic monster story, written by Tom Evans, worked remarkably well.

Most recently, the two also worked together on the 2023 crime thriller Bring Him to Me. Since then, Luke Sparke also made the 2025 dinosaur war movie Primitive War.

Monsters and apocalyptic stories have always been part of his DNA as a filmmaker. His directorial debut was with Red Billabong (2016), then came Occupation (2018) and its 2020 sequel, depicting an alien invasion in Australia.

For me, Scurry was an overall strong monster movie. It’s simply a lull in the final act that took away some of the joy. Had this part been a little tighter, we would have given this a 4 out of 5 rating. I’m making a point of telling you this to highlight that it’s a strong recommendation to watch.

Scurry debuts on all major digital platforms on October 3, 2025. This will coincide with a limited theatrical run.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
