TRUST is a new thriller with a survival plot that stars Sophie Turner. It’s a layered story that could have been told much better. The cast is solid, but I don’t think the filmmaker intended for the focus I ultimately had. Read our full Trust (2025) movie review here!
TRUST is a survival thriller, and I usually really like those. For a long time, I liked this one as well, but I found myself getting annoyed by bad decisions and strange plot developments.
This is by no means a bad movie, but it could have been so much better.
It wins by having a wonderful cast featuring Sophie Turner in the all-important lead with Billy Campbell and Katey Sagal in the two most important supporting roles. Each delivers exactly what the movie needs, but can’t quite save it overall.

A star looking for some peace and quiet
After yet another hacking scandal, a young Hollywood starlet, Lauren Lane (Sophie Turner), finds herself in immediate need of some peace and quiet. She’s been on a popular sitcom since she was a child, so America has watched her grow up.
One thing is the scantily clad photos of “America’s favorite daughter”; another is the picture of a positive pregnancy test. Who is the father, and what will she do?!
This will come into play very soon. Well, the issue of who the father is. Everyone is trying to pressure her into making quick PR choices to make this all go away, but she wants peace and quiet to think it all through.
Once we know who the father is, it will make a lot more sense. Of course, the pregnancy alone also makes sense enough on its own.
She heads to a remote cabin, found by an assistant on Airbnb, but she won’t be alone there for long. Before the night is over, she will be trapped, and while she can stay in her hiding place, she can’t run. Not a good predicament for Lauren Lane.
Loved the cast and characters, not the story
I can’t get into all the things I didn’t like about the story without some major spoilers. Let me settle by saying I felt Lauren Lane was in a position where she finds solutions at the last minute, that could (and should) have been discovered sooner.
Not a big deal perhaps, but in a survival thriller like Trust, you don’t want those things to distract you. Also, as much as I enjoyed Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones, X-Men: Apocalypse, Do Revenge) as Lauren Lane, two supporting roles were amazing as well.
Billy Campbell (I Know What You Did Last Summer) is great as the lead on the show that made Lauren Lane famous. And Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy, Torn Hearts) is brilliant as a “dog lady” who can’t help picking up and saving strays.
I worry about the dog
As anyone who has read a few reviews on this website will know, I am a huge animal lover, so I am right there with Katey Sagal’s character in Trust.
And yes, I did find myself wondering and worrying more about the dog than Lauren Lane. I feel confident this was not the desired outcome of the filmmaker.
Yet here we are, and I have no regrets. Also, for those who care (and this is my one exception about doing spoilers), don’t worry; the dog in Trust will be fine. Honestly, I don’t think Katey Sagal would have taken the role if it weren’t.
Watch Trust in theaters
Trust is directed by Carlson Young (Upgraded, The Blazing World), and it’s a well-paced movie with some great shots throughout. The story and the way it evolves and escalates is a mixed bag. The screenplay comes from Gigi Levangie.
On the one hand, I found many of the characters interesting (some even venture close to being out of a horror-comedy in levels of stupidity), but the plot didn’t work for me. I got annoyed with many of the developments, which came too late.
The runtime is 90 minutes, which works well for it. Overall, it is worth watching, but you should expect to be more irritated than necessary. I did, however, really like the ending, and it’s always ideal to end on a high note.
TRUST will only be in theaters on August 22, 2025.
