MALICE on Prime Video is a new revenge thriller series. It has a stellar cast, but the intensity is somehow lacking. What still makes it worth watching is Jack Whitehall, who is scary good in this. Read our Malice series review here!

MALICE is a new Prime Video series with a revenge plot and a thriller driver. Obviously, there’s a whole mystery to this as well, so it’s like watching a puzzle be laid out on screen. Unfortunately, it’s too slow for my liking.

The series has six episodes, which should make for a tight and intense season. Unfortunately, I was not hooked after the first episode, and the second didn’t do much more for me. I mean, the story is intriguing, but the pacing just did not work for me.

Continue reading our 2025 Malice series review below. Start watching on Prime Video on November 14, 2025.

Lifestyle of the rich and… annoying?!

With Malice, we follow the charismatic tutor, Adam (Jack Whitehall), who is great with kids. This is also how he manages to find his way into the life of the very wealthy Tanner family.

They meet while on a vacation in Greece, where Adam works for another family. However, once the Tanner family’s nanny gets violently ill with a stomach bug of some kind (you’ll know what kind once Adamn feeds her something), he swoops in.

Or rather, he does not swoop in, but the Tanner family asks him to please take the job. Oh yes, he is a crafty networker indeed. And Adam has a plan that involves the patriarch, Jamie Tanner (David Duchovny).

Once the family, now with Adam as their nanny (or “manny”), returns to London, things start to go awry. Adam begins to pit Jamie and his wife, Nat (Carice Van Houten), against each other. All with the goal of bringing down the entire family.

But why? Well, there is always a good reason in the eye of the person doing it. And we will learn why as well, but not until later in the series.

Malice – Review | Prime Video | Revenge Thriller Series

A modern-day Ripley vibe

Malice is very much a revenge thriller focused on the notion that you cannot escape your past. It will catch up, and when it does, you need to figure out how to best deal with it. As a character-driven story, Malice has a great cast, but the writing is just too slow.

Having said that, I really liked Jack Whitehall in this series. He is charming yet insanely sinister, and all at the drop of a hat. I mean, he is eerily off in a way reminiscent of Mr. Ripley, which is also an unavoidable comparison for this series overall.

Obviously, this is a compliment, and I wish this Prime Video series were as good as I feel Jack Whitehall is in his starring role. I love it when these comedic actors take on a darker character portrayal and go all-in.

I definitely feel Jack Whitehall succeeds with that in Malice!

Watch Malice on Prime Video

Malice was created by James Wood, who also writes the series. He previously wrote on The Great and Quacks (which he also created). Directors of the six episodes of Malice are Mike Barker (Broadchurch, The Sandman) and Leonora Lonsdale (The Pale Horse).

I never want to discourage anyone from giving a show a chance. That’s why I can’t help but continue to highlight Jack Whitehall in this review. He delivers such a strong character portrayal that made me wish he’d play a straight-up horror villain next.

Of course, the other cast members also deliver strong portrayals, but this really is about Adam (Jack Whitehall) primarily, so this was the character that could not falter. And he doesn’t. The storytelling and pacing, on the other hand, just did not do much for me.

But hey, maybe this just was not my kind of show. Give it a shot, and maybe Jack Whitehall and the overall story will be a total treat for you.

Malice is out on Prime Video from November 14, 2025.

GEN V: SEASON 2 on Prime Video is finally here with eight new episodes. It still does not shy away from craziness – and I love it. Also, the sudden passing of one of the stars has been incorporated in a very respectful way. Read our full Gen V Season 2 review here!

GEN V: SEASON 2 is premiering on Prime Video with the first three episodes of the season. You can look forward to another eight episodes with this second season, so it’s the same as season 1.

We’ve watched all eight episodes for this review, and the first three episodes do set the stage nicely. Still, it gets wilder the further we get. As always! Now I cannot wait for the next season of The Boys to continue this wild story.

Continue reading our Gen V Season 2 review below. Find the first three episodes of season 2 on Prime Video on September 17, 2025.

Saying goodbye to Andre

Obviously, the first order of business for Gen V season 2 was dealing with the sudden and tragic passing of Chance Perdomo, who portrayed Andre.

Not only is the first episode dedicated to him, but the storyline also acknowledges his sudden and untimely passing. I won’t get into the specifics as that would be a spoiler, but it does have an impact on the entire season.

Also, Gen V and The Boys are closely related, so the events of the most recent season of The Boys will play into season 2 of Gen V. And vice versa, which is why you’ll be very eager to watch The Boys season 5 after this second Gen V season.

For this new season of Gen V, we’re dealing with the aftermath of The Boys season 4 ending. Particularly, the fact that Homelander is now essentially running the United States with an iron fist.

Gen V: Season 2 – Review | The Boys Spinoff Series

A new day has indeed dawned…

When season 1 of Gen V ended, it was with quite a cliffhanger. Also, most of the (surviving!) core cast was in a very dire situation. As season 2 begins, it’s business as usual for Godolkin University (or just “God U”) as a new semester begins.

Meanwhile, America is still trying to adjust to Homelander’s iron fist being the de facto leader of the country. Not least thanks to Vought using all kinds of “Supes” to keep everyone not in agreement in check.

Oh yes, it is very much coded to fit the current political climate. As it has always been the case with The Boys and Gen V. I love it!

Anyway, back at Godolkin University, a new Dean is in charge. He goes by “Cipher” and wants to ensure that the students of God U evolve and develop their powers.

After all, they are a “struggling minority”, so they must be ready to fight back against those who hate supes.

Welcome back to God U

While Cate and Sam enjoy being celebrated as heroes, Marie, Jordan, and Emma start off where they ended in season 1: Locked up! However, with a focus on evolving powerful supes, they are soon released.

Rather reluctantly (not least due to what happened with Andre), but months of being locked up with trauma and grief as your cellmates warrant a welcome change.

But why is this new Dean Chipher (Hamish Linklater) so interested in Marie (Jaz Sinclair) and wants to work directly with her in one-on-one sessions?! You’ll have to watch season 2 to find out.

And yes, you will get answers in this season. Also concerning Marie’s past and her family, most importantly, her sister, whom she has been searching for all along.

Watch season 2 of Gen V on Prime Video

Michele Fazekas is the showrunner and executive producer of season 2, just as she was on season 1. Overall, those who created this spin-off show are still on board in their respective roles. Read up on them here >

The core cast of season 1 (again, those who survived) also return, so you can look forward to seeing Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, and Asa Germann once again. Also, Sean Patrick Thomas is back!

Obviously, Hamish Linklater (Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass) as Dean Cipher will also play a huge role in the season 2 storyline.

I have been a big fan of The Boys and the spin-off series Gen V since the beginning, so I was very pleased with the eight episodes in this season as well. If you’re a fan, I can’t imagine you won’t love these new episodes as well.

Gen V season 2 debuts with three episodes on September 17, 2025.

Details

Showrunner: Michele Fazekas
Cast: Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Sean Patrick Thomas, Hamish Linklater

Plot

School is back in session. As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander’s iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it.

THE GIRLFRIEND on Prime Video is a new Thriller series starring Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke in the two key roles. It is brilliant and gets very dark. The six episodes make for perfectly paced storytelling. Read our full The Girlfriend series review here!

THE GIRLFRIEND is a new Prime Video series with just six episodes, so it does not drag on for too long. It’s based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name, which I have not read, but I am certainly intrigued now.

For the two all-important roles in this series, we’ve got Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke. The latter plays the title role, and both deliver nuanced, intense, and even quite scary portrayals of women ready to fight for what they want.

Continue reading our The Girlfriend series review below. Find it on Prime Video from September 10, 2025.

Two fierce women face off

With The Girlfriend, we follow two women and the most important man in their lives. For one of the women, Laura (Robin Wright), this is her son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson). He’s very much an adult man – a doctor even – but still her “little boy”.

Laura seems to have it all. She’s an American woman living in London, enjoying a career where she has several galleries, and enjoys finding new artists. Also, she has a loving husband, but her son is obviously number one!

The other woman we follow in The Girlfriend is the title character. Her name is Cherry (Olivia Cooke), and she’s the woman Daniel has begun dating. The first introduction between his mom and girlfriend doesn’t turn out too well.

It’s highly doubtful that anyone would be good enough for Laura’s son, but Cherry most certainly isn’t even close. Basically, Cherry needs to get out of Daniel’s life, if it’s up to Laura.

Unfortunately for Laura, it really isn’t.

The Girlfriend (2025) Series Review

Two sides to every story… and the truth

The more Laura is convinced that Cherry is up to no good, the more extreme measures are taken by Laura. But is Cherry the social climber (a nicer word for “golddigger”) that Laura suspects, or is Laura blinded by her son growing up?!

As you will come to learn, there are two sides to every story. And then there’s the truth. Hopefully, the truth is somewhere between the two sides to the story that we are shown, which in itself is a wonderful element to the series.

First, we see a situation from one person’s side, then from the other person’s. Everything from actions taken to words spoken can differ wildly or be relatively close with just nuances in difference.

Watching Robin Wright and Oliva Cooke (Bates Motel), two actors I absolutely adore, portray the same characters, as seen from both their own and each other’s POV, is a brilliant move.

It results in characters that are much more nuanced and fleshed out. A little crazy, at times, also. Then again, once you see how this story evolves and escalates, you’ll understand them both much better.

The truth is truly a matter of perspective, and with The Girlfriend, you need to take in multiple perspectives to get close to what is actually happening.

Watch The Girlfriend on Prime Video

The new Prime Video series is based on the novel by Michelle Frances and has been adapted for television by Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher (The Tattooist of Auschwitz).

Writing the teleplays alongside Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher are a few familiar writers. These include Helen Kingston (The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself), Ava Wong Davies (The Rings of Power), and Isis Davis (Killing Eve).

The six episodes in the season are directed by star Robin Wright and Andrea Harkin (Time, The Confessions of Frannie Langton). Each directs three episodes, so it’s very much a joint effort.

The ending of The Girlfriend was as wild as it was (in certain ways, at the very least) unexpected. I enjoyed watching this entire series and can only recommend the trip down the rabbit hole alongside these characters.

The Girlfriend premieres on Prime Video on September 10, 2025.

Details

The Girlfriend follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel. Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective.

THE BONDSMAN on Prime Video is a new horror series starring Beth Grant and Kevin Bacon. Not only are they mother and son, they are also both bounty hunters and make for a very dynamic duo. I loved it. Read our The Bondsman Season 1 review here!

THE BONDSMAN is a new Prime Video horror series starring Kevin Bacon in the title role. However, to me, what really made this a surprisingly funny and entertaining experience was Beth Grant. Or rather, the two of them together in this crazy plot.

This is a supernatural horror series, and those can typically become a bit too silly for me. Yes, even as someone who adores the horror comedy hybrid. And yet, this Prime Video just hit all the right notes for me. Season 1 has eight half-hour episodes, and even that runtime is a plus.

Continue reading our The Bondsman Season 1 review below. Find it on Prime Video from April 3, 2025.

Bounty Hunter for Hell

In The Bondsman, we meet bounty hunter Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon) just as his life ends. While hunting down a criminal, those very same people set a trap for him, and he is killed. However, for reasons we will learn later, he is sent to Hell and strikes a deal with the Devil.

The murdered Hub is resurrected by the Devil with one specific job: He is to trap and send back escaped demons to Hell. If he fails, he will himself be sent to Hell for good. This is his one chance of staying alive and on this Earth.

In other words, he’s still a bounty hunter, but now he hunts to send demons back to Hell and is employed by the Devil. An employer who rewards Hub by letting him stay alive.

Of course, it doesn’t make matters easier that demons do their demonic thing of possessing other living human beings. So, while Hub is killing demons, he also takes down whoever is possessed at the time.

The Bondsman: Season 1 – Horror Series Review | Prime Video

Kevin Bacon and Beth Grant make for a great duo

While this Prime Video series is obviously about Kevin Bacon as the title character of The Bondsman, I was very happy to see Beth Grant in a huge role as well. She plays his mom, Kitty, who has some of the best lines.

Often directed towards her son, Hub, and with perfect timing. I had laugh-out-loud moments in every episode. Usually from whatever Kitty (Beth Grant) was saying to her son.

While Kevin Bacon has been in horror and genre productions throughout his career, so has Beth Grant.

Kevin Bacon was in the very first Friday the 13th, the original Flatliners, Stir of Echoes, and he played the title character in Hollow Man (2000). More recently, he was in They/Them (2022) and You Should Have Left (2020).

Beth Grant has been in the 2021 Grave Intentions anthology and Willy’s Wonderland. Also, she was in Child’s Play 2The Ungodly, and has a small part in Flatliners.

Also playing key roles in the Prime Video series The Bondsman are more familiar faces. We have Jennifer Nettles (The Exorcist: Believer), Damon Herriman (Mindhunter), Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space), and Jolene Purdy (Unseen). All of them are brilliant in their respective roles.

Watch season 1 of The Bondsman on Prime Video

The creator and writer of The Bondsman is Grainger David. He has written and directed five short films before this Prime Video series. Other writers include Satinder Kaur, Nina Kim, and Erik Oleson (The Man in the High Castle).

The directors of the season 1 episodes are Sanaa Hamri (Gen V), Thor Freudenthal (The Hunting Party), Lauren Wolkstein (Dead Ringers), and Catriona Mckenzie (The Boys, Outer Range).

This new supernatural horror series comes from Blumhouse Television, which always tends to be a good sign. Not least when it comes to genre productions. Blumhouse Television also produced The Sticky and The Horrors of Dolores Roach.

All 8 episodes of The Bondsman premiere exclusively on Prime Video on the premiere day. I loved that they are half-hour episodes. Perfect bite-size entertainment that you cannot help but binge-watch. Enjoy season 1 now – hopefully, we’ll get a season 2 of The Bondsman later.

The Bondsman Season 1 is streaming on Prime Video from April 3, 2025.

HOLLAND on Prime Video is a new thriller starring Nicole Kidman. It comes from the director of FRESH, so expect the unexpected. It may seem like a drama with some comedy, but we’re covering it for a good reason. Read our full Holland movie review here!

HOLLAND is a new Prime Video thriller starring Nicole Kidman, living a seemingly idyllic life in Holland, Michigan. Of course, we’re not covering this movie because it’s about a homemaker leading an idyllic life.

Trust me when I tell you that this movie definitely belongs on our website. Also, believe me when I tell you that you’ll have to be patient to discover exactly what’s going on. Look beyond what’s obvious and on the surface. That’s when it gets a lot darker.

Continue reading our Holland movie review below. Find it on Prime Video from March 27, 2025.

This is not The Stepford Wives 2.0

When Holland begins, it’s easy to draw a comparison to another movie Nicole Kidman starred in back in 2004. The character of Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman) does seem very reminiscent of her role in The Stepford Wives.

However, this movie is not that!

Not the character, the world, the storyline, or anything else. And it won’t be too long before you recognize that Holland is not The Stepford Wives in a 2.0 version. Having said that, the world Nancy exists in does seem to almost aspire to the same level as those iconic Stepford Wives.

There’s the classic focus on all things Dutch, as the town is obviously settled by people from the Netherlands, aka Holland. It’s a town of windmills, wooden clogs, and traditional garments for various parades.

Actually, Holland technically refers to two regions (North and South) in the Netherlands, but that really isn’t relevant to this story.  What is relevant is that Nance is about to discover that the man she married is keeping a secret.

She cannot bear knowing that he’s keeping a secret from her without getting to the bottom of it, so she starts investigating. And this is where things will ultimately take a very dark turn.

Holland (2025) – Review | Thriller on Prime Video

If you liked Fresh, you should enjoy Holland

For quite some time, Holland does seem like a dramedy of sorts. We’re following Nicole Kidman portraying a homemaker and teacher. She teaches that archaic kind of class about how to be a good wife. Despite this movie taking place around the year 2000.

Anyway, Nancy is happy enough, but clearly not as happy as she could be. Also, despite having lived in the town for a long time, she is still a newcomer.

This leads her to strike up a friendship with the new teacher, Dave Delgado (Gael García Bernal), who sticks out like a sore thumb in this very white town. And yes, it will lead to racist attacks once everything begins to crumble and the pretty surface shows cracks.

Still, that’s more of a drama storyline than a thriller or even a horror story.

Well, that won’t last.

Before Holland is over, you will realize that this movie is very much a genre movie. One that has a sinister side that I never saw coming. Neither did Nancy or Dave, and Nancy’s husband, Fred Vandergroot (Matthew Macfadyen), was perfectly happy to keep everything a secret.

While the twist is nothing like Fresh, I still feel that the vibe and evolution of the story are ideal for those who liked that movie.

Watch Holland on Prime Video now

As already mentioned, Holland comes from the director of Fresh. Her name is Mimi Cave, and she has a brilliant way of lulling the audience into relaxing before hitting us with a sledgehammer of a twist.

In Fresh, Sebastian Stan (co-starring with Daisy Edgar-Jones) was the one delivering the twist, here it’s Matthew Macfadyen, though one could argue that Nicole Kidman delivers quite a few surprises before things get that far.

For Holland, the screenplay comes from Andrew Sodroski. He previously co-created the Discovery Original series Manhunt about various true crime criminals. Also, he’s writing on season 2 of Poker Face.

Whatever you’re expecting from Holland, just let it unfold and enjoy the ride. It was a bit too long for my liking, but the character-driven storyline with gorgeous twists and a great cast made for a very entertaining movie.

Holland is out on Prime Video from March 27, 2025.

In this wildly unpredictable thriller, Nicole Kidman is the meticulous Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher and homemaker whose picture-perfect life with her community pillar husband (Matthew Macfadyen) and son (Jude Hill) in tulip-filled Holland, Michigan tumbles into a twisted tale. NEWTOPIA on Prime Video is a new Korean Zombie Series made as a horror-comedy. Almost a slapstick slasher, really, so it surely won’t be for everyone. It premieres with the first two episodes and lots of well-known South Korean actors. Read our Newtopia series review here!

NEWTOPIA is a new Prime Video horror-comedy series from South Korea. Do not be fooled by the official genres of “romance” and “comedy”. Sure, there is lots of comedy – it’s practically slapstick at times. And yes, romantic relationships are part of the story, but that can be said for virtually any horror movie as well.

This is a zombie story and we’re witnessing a zombie apocalypse as it happens in Seoul. The horror-comedy hybrid that gets very silly (and extremely bloody) won’t be for everyone. Just hang in there, and be ready for a slow first episode before episode 2 gets all kinds of crazy. The season has eight episodes.

Continue reading our Newtopia series review below. Find the two first episodes on Prime Video from February 7, 2025.

Witness the zombie apocalypse in Seoul

Lee Jae-yoon (Park Jeong-min) is starting his compulsory military service older than most and has a lot of anxiety about his future. Also, the soldiers in his unit are not the sharpest tools in the shed – so to speak. If these are the guys meant to keep Seoul safe, I would be nervous.

In fact, I think the soldiers are nervous themselves.

Jae-yoon’s girlfriend, Young-joo (Kim Jisoo) isn’t happy about them being apart. Or rather, she’s out partying and making him worried. However, all of this is small potatoes when a zombie outbreak suddenly spreads across the city of Seoul at record speed.

Isn’t that always the case with a zombie apocalypse?! Before anyone can react, many are dead and infected.

Fast zombies and young love

This sounds very dark and serious, but you’ll do well to keep in mind that Newtopia is a horror-comedy. The zombies are violent and fast, so there is plenty of death and blood. In fact, the zombies are a lot like what we saw in the South Korean mega-hit Train to Busan.

However, in Newtopia, the uninfected are reacting in stupid (and yes, silly) ways which means you won’t know who survives and who dies. Actually, at first, many of those who freeze or do weird things tend to survive in incredible ways.

Think the opposite of Final Destination, where somehow survival is thrust upon these fools instead of creative death traps. The zombie (and human) deaths are very creative and often a little (or a lot) funny as well.

Overall, however, the core plot of Newtopia will revolve around these two lovebirds trying to get back to one another, while fighting zombies.

Newtopia – Review | Korean Zombie Apocalypse Series | Prime Video

Fans of South Korean productions are in luck

Whether the genre-hybrid of Newtopia is your cup of tea or not, the cast of the Prime Video zombie series from South Korea should be intriguing. The series stars Park Jeong-min and K-Pop sensation BLACKPINK’s Jisoo as the young couple trying to find each other during the zombie apocalypse in Seoul.

Park Jeong-min has already been in several productions reviewed on this website. Including the popular Netflix series Hellbound, Time to Hunt, and Svaha: The Sixth Finger (2019) to name just a few. Also, he was in Park Chan-wook‘s award-winning Decisions to Leave (2022).

Other familiar faces in Newtopia include Im Sung-jae (Hellbound season 2), Lee Hak-joo (Watching), Hong Seo-hui (Alchemy of Souls), and Kim Chan-hyung (Project Wolf Hunting, Sweet Home). Again, just to name a few. In this case, those most familiar to me via their previous roles.

Start watching Newtopia on Prime Video now!

Newtopia is an MGM Amazon Studios production and the episodes are directed by Yoon Sung-hyun. You may know his work from the movies Bleak Night and Time to Hunt. Both also starred Newtopia star Park Jeong-min.

The series is co-written by Han Jin-won and Jee Ho-jin. Han Jin-won co-wrote the Academy Award-winning Parasite (2019) with director Bong Joon-ho. Also, he was an Assistant Director on his Netflix movie Okja (2017). Jee Ho-jin wrote the Hulu & Disney+ series A Shop for Killers.

With so much talent behind this series, you won’t want to miss out on the unique zombie story filled with action, romance, and comedy. We’ll be getting a weekly episode of Newtopia, but the series premieres with the release of its two first episodes.

Newtopia premieres on Prime Video worldwide on February 7, 2025.

BLINK TWICE is on Prime Video now and you do not want to miss out on this psychological thriller. You should know that the story is brutal but it’s also very current and important. Read our full Blink Twice movie review and watch it on Prime Video now!

BLINK TWICE is now on Prime Video, and despite how uncomfortable and violent it gets, you really should watch it. The story is as important as it is eerily current and realistic – yes, I said it and I will be getting back to the realism of it later. This is fiction, but reality has a way of being even crazier than fiction.

This is the directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz and I really hope she’ll continue making movies as well as star in them. She stays behind the camera for this one but the cast is amazing, so that’s not a problem. The runtime is 1 hour and 42 minutes, and we need to get halfway through before we all know exactly what’s happening.

Small men and their power

In Blink Twice, we meet the tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) just as he has recovered rather successfully from being “canceled” (don’t they all?!). He managed to do this by apologizing via social media – again, don’t they all?! – and then “recovered” by buying his own island, where he is completely isolated.

Or, you know, where he hangs out with his pose of male friends and the women they invite to join them.

The film’s protagonist is the waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie), who dreams of a better life. She has a bit of a crush on Slater King, who is of course now a “better man”. At least officially. That’s why she ends up going when he invites her and her friend Jess (Alia Shawkat) to come to his island.

A couple of other women join them on the island trip, which is truly a paradise. Delicious food is served and the champagne is flowing non-stop. And yet, something is wrong. Or, at the very least, off. Very off. Frida wakes up with dirt under her nails – more than once – but can’t remember what happened the night before.

When she starts to remember, she would probably rather forget. All the men seem oh-so-charming during the day. Sure, there’s the whole “boys will be boys” thing, but it’s nothing crazy, and everyone is under the influence of something all day anyway. However, the daytime is only one side of their behavior.

Blink Twice (2024) – Review | Psychological Thriller

An important and all-too-relevant story

Without giving away spoilers (though the trailer does that as well), I have to get into aspects of the actual Blink Twice concept to truly explain why I love it. Basically, it’s all about how some people behave when they think they can get away with it.

Not all, but it seems far more than we’d expect. Also, many can be pushed (even bullied) to go along with more than they’d expect of themselves.

This is a work of fiction, and many would say that Blink Twice takes it to extremes. I strongly disagree that this is the case. Just look at the very current cases involving Diddy’s parties or the Gisèle Pelicot case from France. With those in mind, Blink Twice seems eerily relevant and highly relevant to what’s happening around us.

Hell, you can just follow the news for the latest cases about women (and men) being exploited in various ways. The cases where several people (usually men, let’s be honest) are involved all seem to refer to the events as “playing around” or calling it “a game”.

Blink Twice may start out giving you that eerie Midsommar feeling of not knowing what’s going on. However, I promise it turns more along the lines of Antebellum (or even Get Out) and that’s much more brutal.

As mentioned earlier, Zoë Kravitz (The Batman) is making her directorial debut with Blink Twice. She also co-wrote the screenplay with E.T. Feigenbaum, who has previously only written on the TV series High Fidelity. However, he has a few short films in post-production, so more is on the way from him as well.

Recently, we also reviewed Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut (in October 2024), and while the two films are very different, they hit some of the same points. These are movies showing how some men behave towards women when they can get away with it. Usually by being charming first and then doing harm later.

For Blink Twice, the entire thing works so well thanks to the wonderful cast led by Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum, Alia Shawkat, and Adria Arjona. In addition, we see wonderful actors in smaller roles as well. From Geena Davis and Kyle MacLachlan to Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Levon Hawke, and Haley Joel Osment.

While I honestly found Blink Twice very unpleasant at times, it’s also an entertaining film with an important story. Even the ending hit the spot for me, which always helps.

Blink Twice made its streaming debut on MGM+ on November 21, 2024, and will expand its streaming release to Prime Video on January 21, 2025.

THE CALENDAR KILLER on Prime Video is a new crime thriller from Germany (org. title: Der Heimweg). It features a serial killer plot and while it’s (too) slow, it’s also intriguing. Read our full The Calendar Killer movie review here!

THE CALENDAR KILLER is a new Prime Video crime thriller from Germany (org. title: Der Heimweg). This is a serial killer story, but the movie focuses on the next possible victim. The runtime is just 1 hour and 37 minutes, but it could’ve been a bit tighter.

There’s a slow-burn vibe that I enjoyed thanks to the intriguing evolution of the storyline. However, it does get too slow before the sudden ending, which is very neat and quick. It’s based on a book by author Sebastian Fitzek, which I have not read, so I can’t say if it follows the plot.

Familiar yet different

When The Calendar Killer was a good 15 minutes into its runtime, I kept being reminded of The Guilty (both the Danish original and the US remake). We follow Jules (Sabin Tambrea from the Netflix series Perfume) as he works remotely on an escort phone line.

We’re talking “escort,” as in a telephone support line for women who feel unsafe walking home alone. They can call this phone service to get home safely. We experience the world from Jules’ seat for quite some time, but we also see what happens with people elsewhere.

It’s a fairly quiet evening when he suddenly receives a call from a young mother named Klara (Luise Heyer from the Netflix hit series Dark). She claims to be the next victim of a serial killer who targets women.

However, being the selected victim by this killer isn’t her only problem. In fact, she may even be ready to die. The movie evolves and twists in various ways which I liked. Having watched a slow-burn development, the ending just felt almost rushed which was a shame.

A different kind of killer

The serial killer in The Calender Killer has a rather unique method for expressing his madness. It is still madness, and he is still a killer, but he offers his victim a choice. Well, “choice” may be a little strong, as it feels almost like the kind of choice Jigsaw would give you.

Each victim’s journey towards dying begins when they wake up to a date written in blood followed by the words “Er order Du” which translates to “Him or You”.

Kill or be killed, is essentially the choice.

And the person the woman is required to kill is their husband. If they haven’t killed their husband by midnight on the given date, the Calendar Killer will kill the woman instead.

The director of The Calendar Killer is Adolfo J. Kolmerer. He previously directed episodes of the pandemic thriller series Sløborn (2020-2024) and the mystery series Oderbruch (2024-). The screenplay for this new movie comes from writer Susanne Schneider (Bella Block).

As already mentioned initially, this new serial killer thriller is based on a book by Sebastian Fitzek. In fact, the full original title is Sebastian Fitzeks Der Heimweg. The title of “Der Heimweg” means “The way home” and as such focuses on the woman rather than the killer.

In the movie, we follow several characters and you won’t know exactly what each person’s role is until the end. Well, you may guess part of it, but ultimately, it does have quite a few twists and turns.

In the core concept, the idea works well, but it isn’t about the title character and his victims. The movie is about one victim, as we follow her in the final few hours of the day the serial killer has listed as her “deadline”. The date is December 6, which is made more obvious by the Christmas decorations all over – not June 12, as Americans may read it.

A release date during December would’ve been a lot better but for some reason, we always end up getting these Christmas-themed movies after the Holiday season.

The Calendar Killer is out on Prime Video from January 16, 2025.

THE STICKY on Prime Video is a gloriously fun little crime-comedy series inspired by the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. The casting is perfect and the six short episodes make it extremely binge-worthy. Read our full The Sticky series review here!

THE STICKY is a new Prime Video series that mixes comedy and crime. With just six half-hour episodes, it’s a sticky little treat and it was impossible for me not to binge-watch it. This is a Blumhouse production, so you know it’ll get dark and wacky in all the right ways.

The star of the show is Margo Martindale, and she’s joined by a wonderful cast. One that includes series producer Jamie Lee Curtis. Be sure to check out this limited series inspired by the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. We watched all episodes for this review – we simply had to.

(Not) The true story of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist

As revealed very clearly by the introduction to each episode, The Sticky may be inspired by the very true story about the so-called “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist”. However, this Prime Video limited series is not the true story.

Instead, this is a fun little fantasy about how it could all have happened. And, admittedly, it’s a wonderful little thought experiment.

We meet a maple syrup farmer, Ruth Landry (three-time Emmy winner Margo Martindale) as she’s going through a serious crisis. She’s a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer, who is being pressured by the Maple Syrup Association to sell her farm.

Her husband, who is the official owner of the farm, is in a coma, and the greedy head of the association wants to exploit this fact. However, he should know better than to try and push Ruth Landry, when she’s already under pressure.

Instead of giving in, she fights back. She gets creative before finally turning to crime. She teams up with a hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Chris Diamantopoulos), and the kind mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Guillaume Cyr). A wonderfully weird trio, if ever I saw one!

All three have had it with being second-rate in their respective lives, and form a plan that will result in a multi-million dollar heist. Not for money or gold, but for syrup on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus.

The Sticky: Season 1 – Review | Comedy-Crime | Prime Video

A wonderfully sticky treat

The title of The Sticky feels extra appropriate once you start watching as you will immediately find yourself stuck to the story. Be warned that it will suck you in like a regular flytrap. And also, you will probably be left wanting more.

Six episodes just feel too short for something so good!

always enjoy watching Margo Martindale in whatever she does. Among the titles we’ve reviewed are the crazy horror-comedy Cocaine Bear and the Netflix true-crime series The Watcher. Both are very much worth watching – as is The Sticky on Prime Video.

Oscar and Emmy winner (and Final Girl horror icon) Jamie Lee Curtis is also in The Sticky in a guest star capacity. Also, she’s executive producing so this is very much her project as well.

In other key roles, we also see Gita Miller and Suzanne Clément along with Guy Nadon, Mickaël Gouin, and Michel Perron.

Season 2 of The Sticky on Prime Video?

There’s no information on a season 2 of The Sticky, which seems to be made as a limited series. However, the ending of episode 6 definitely leaves room for more seasons.

In other words, we hope to get The Sticky Season 2, but we (as of writing this review) have no news of more seasons coming. Fingers crossed that this will change once people watch it and Prime Video has a hit on their hands.

Watch The Sticky miniseries on Prime Video

The creators, executive producers, showrunners, and writers of The Sticky are Brian Donovan and Ed Herro. The two previously worked as writers on the dark comedy series American Housewife (2016-2021) which was created by Sarah Dunn.

As already mentioned, The Sticky is produced by Blumhouse Television, Jamie Lee Curtis’ Comet Pictures, Jonathan Levine’s Megamix, and Sphere Media.

The series is directed by Michael Dowse (Preacher, Future Man) and Joyce Wong (Sort of) and each of the six episodes is a true treat. Honestly, if you’re in the mood for something weird and wonderfully entertaining, then you cannot miss with The Sticky. Enjoy!

The Sticky is out on Prime Video on December 6, 2024.

A serial killer series on Prime Video is #1 and we can easily understand why. Read more about the new series with a highly creative serial killer – and the cop chasing him – right here!

There’s a new serial killer series on Prime Video that has become an instant hit. If you’re also into intense crime thrillers with complex characters and a gripping story, then Cross on Prime Video might be for you. In fact, it should be pretty darn perfect for you!

The series, based on James Patterson’s popular Alex Cross book series, has very quickly become a favorite among viewers and is currently the number one show on the streaming service. We can’t say we didn’t expect that, as it features a highly creative serial killer.

Also, we’re even following the serial killer from the sidelines most of the way, so we know what he’s up to as he takes action.

The cop and the serial killer

Prime Video’s Cross stars Aldis Hodge as the title character Alex Cross. This character is a skilled detective and forensic psychologist in Washington, D.C. In the series, we follow him as he struggles with both personal loss and the hunt for a sadistic serial killer.

This killer operates in such a sophisticated way that his crimes initially seem like random accidents. However, Cross begins to find patterns and delves deep into the criminal’s psyche to create a profile and uncover the truth.

The series also features a strong supporting cast, including Isaiah Mustafa as Cross’s loyal sidekick, John Sampson. You can also look forward to Johnny Ray Gill, who delivers an unforgettable (at times wild and crazy) performance as the enigmatic Bobby Trey.

Fanboy from the Cross series

The Hunt for a Fanboy

Our own Cross season 1 review here at Heaven of Horror also focuses on the fact that the series offers a mix of suspense and psychological depth. Aldis Hodge in the lead role is crucial to the series’ success. His nuanced performance offers both strength and vulnerability.

However, we all know that the villain is often the most intriguing character. Be it a Disney movie or a horror movie. While Cross delves into both the killer’s methods and Alex Cross’ own PTSD challenges, it’s creating a world that you can immerse yourself in.

The storyline is both thought-provoking and nerve-wracking.

It’s impossible not to focus on the serial killer, who’s nicknamed “Fanboy” by the police and media. He kills victims who resemble well-known serial killers. They must die in the same way as the original serial killer, which requires a lot of planning, but Fanboy manages it.

Also, Fanboy has his own fans who follow the murders on a live stream. However, Fanboy is smart enough to hide his identity with a mask on these recordings. So, while we as the audience quickly find out who hides behind the mask, Fanboy’s fans must wait until his final work is done!

Why should you watch Cross on Prime Video?

You should, of course, watch the new serial killer series on Prime Video if you enjoy a good crime story. The kind where both the “good guys” and the “bad guys” have nuances. Also, one where the serial killer is a truly fascinating character. A narcissistic psycho, obviously, but very entertaining.

Give Cross a chance if you like a series that:

  • Combines classic crime with modern psychological thriller
  • Explores themes such as loss, justice, and the search for the truth
  • Offers eight episodes filled with tension that will make it hard not to binge-watch
  • Doesn’t end after season 1 – Cross season 2 has already been filmed

Cross is available to watch on Prime Video now and is already receiving praise for both its script and production. It’s a must-watch for fans of the serial killer genre and intelligent crime stories.
