TAKEOUT on Tubi is a new thriller from Jem Garrard (Slay), and it has all the awesome traits of this genre filmmaker. It involves a night shift at a diner and a serial killer. Also, of course, several amazing characters. Read our full Takeout movie review here!

TAKEOUT is a new Tubi Original from filmmaker Jem Garrard. This time it’s a farcical thriller, so we’re leaning heavily into satire and kitsch moments. Well, that’s usually the case (to some extent) for Jem Garrard movies, and I love it!

With this latest Tubi thriller, you’ll get a serial killer story and lots of awesome and fun characters to keep you on your toes. Please note that Tubi also has a documentary from 2020 with the same title.

A serial killer during the night shift

For this latest Tubi thriller, it’s a serial killer story where the entire movie plays out in a diner. Unfortunately for those working there, it’s the only place open at all hours, so they get a lot of quirky and weird customers.

On this particular night, it includes a serial killer. One already on the news and with his own serial killer name: The Dollkeeper.

The only highlight for those working the diner night shift is that there’s a huge reward for information that leads to the serial killer. Also, they are not on good terms with the local cops, who annoy them during every shift.

Of course, with this being a farcical thriller, the three diner workers will soon find themselves in over their heads.

Why isn’t our rating for Takeout higher?!

I’m using a lot of positive words for this review. Amazing, wonderful, and awesome have been scattered throughout this Takeout review of the Tubi movie. However, I do have one or two issues with it.

Well, “issues” is a bit much, but something is weighing down our overall rating.

Honestly, the main reason our rating isn’t higher is that it runs a little too long. However, that’s a minor issue that is highlighted by the fact that Jem Garrard is clearly a hit for Tubi.

A good thing for us genre film fans, as it means we get more genre movies.

Unfortunately, it also means that these movies are the product of their proverbial golden goose, so commercial breaks seem both more frequent and longer. At least this was my viewing experience.

Watch the 2025 Takeout thriller on Tubi now

Writer and director of Takeout (2025) is Jem Garrard, who has fast become a filmmaker I never miss out on. From Slay to Invasive and its sequel, Jem Garrard always delivers on intriguing plots and amazing characters.

The cast yet again features familiar faces. In true Mike Flanagan fashion, Jem Garrard also uses the same actors again and again. For Takeout, you can look forward to Deoudoné Pretorius, Daniel Janks, Darron Meyer, and the unforgettable Robyn Scott.

The star of this Tubi thriller is N’kone Mametja (Unseen) with Damien Wantenaar (Killer Body Count) in another key role. I hope and expect to see both in future Garrard productions.

Takeout premieres on Tubi on September 19, 2025.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
