TOGETHER is a horror movie in the body horror subgenre, with just a touch of dark comedy sprinkled in. It takes its time to unfold, luring you into a false sense of security. But when the physical transformation finally hits, it lands with brutal impact. Read our Together movie review here!
TOGETHER is a horror movie now out on digital. It premiered in theaters last month, so maybe you’ve already heard some buzz. We’re deep in the realm of body horror here, with some wild physical “complications” that push things to the extreme.
Overall, the story escalates into something increasingly intense as it unravels. Certain scenes almost feel like they crawl under your skin. Sure, that could also be said about Bring Her Back, though in a very different way. With a runtime of 100 minutes, Together runs a little too long for its own good, but it’s definitely worth watching.
Keep reading our Together review below – and don’t miss it when it hits digital on August 26, 2025.
The terrifying surrender
In Together, we meet Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) just as they’re leaving their friends – and city life – behind to move out to the countryside. In other words, they give up everything familiar, except each other.
Millie has landed a job as a teacher, while Tim still dreams of making it as a musician. He spends all his time on music – though he also handles cooking and is actually very good at it. So, it’s not like he isn’t contributing to their daily life.
Still, rural living is a whole different story when you’re used to the buzz of the city. It doesn’t take long before tensions start creeping into their relationship. On top of that, Tim is still struggling with a relatively recent personal trauma, which doesn’t make things easier.
But the real nightmare begins when they appear to fall victim to some kind of curse. A natural force they unknowingly invite in themselves – and one that quickly begins to manifest in terrifying, physical ways.
Before everything spirals completely out of control for Tim and Millie, we also meet a few other “couples” who’ve been struck by the same force. Let’s just say: fighting it is not an option… unless you’re ready to pay a horrifying price.
Perfectly cast body horror
With Dave Franco (Love Lies Bleeding) and Alison Brie (Horse Girl, Promising Young Woman) in the lead roles, Together couldn’t have asked for a stronger foundation. The two are married in real life and have made several projects together.
Here, they might just deliver their wildest collaboration yet. It’s brilliant!
Tim and Millie aren’t always good for each other – but they’re definitely not good without each other either. That core dynamic is the heart of the story, even before the body horror element really kicks in.
And yes, the physical transformation does take center stage eventually. Especially towards the climax, when the Spice Girls track “2 Become 1” plays in the background. It’s twisted, romantic horror at its finest.
Sure, many other actors could’ve taken on these roles, but it’s doubtful the result would’ve been the same. Both leads are put through extreme physical demands here, and their real-life trust clearly pays off on screen.
In another standout role, Damon Herriman (Mindhunter, The Nightingale, The Bondsman) delivers a wonderfully understated yet powerful performance.
Watch Together digitally now
Together is both written and directed by Michael Shanks – and remarkably, this is his feature debut. Jumping straight into such a bold and visceral project takes guts, but passion-driven films like this often resonate the most.
Personally, I’d take 20 heartfelt, nerve-rattling indie horrors over one glossy but soulless studio production any day.
Michael Shanks’ passion is clear in every frame. The story is even loosely inspired by his own life (not literally, of course). Having been with his partner since school, the fear of both losing and being trapped with “the one” became the seed for Together.
So yes, beneath all the gore, this is also a love story – a very emotional, sometimes romantic take on what it means to fully give yourself to another person. Of course, in true body horror fashion, that surrender isn’t just emotional or legal…it’s physical. Flesh, blood, and bone.
And in that sense, Together absolutely nails what it sets out to do.
Together will be available digitally on August 26, 2025.
