DEATH IN APARTMENT 603: WHAT HAPPENED TO ELLEN GREENBERG?is a new Hulu & Disney+ docuseries. This is a heartbreaking true crime documentary series that plays out like an actual nightmare.

A death that is initially ruled a suicide, despite grossly strange circumstances, is later ruled a homicide. And then once again ruled a suicide, for reasons that are very difficult to understand.

The strange death of Ellen Greenberg

Watching any true-crime documentary can be heartbreaking as well as angering, but this still hits particularly hard. As revealed (indirectly, anyway) by the title, this docuseries is about Ellen Greenberg and her death in apartment 603.

The apartment is located in a very safe building, in a nice neighborhood, but the location ultimately doesn’t matter much. What does matter is that she died from 20 stab wounds… and the police at the scene ruled it a suicide.

This was the first of many mistakes, as this initial “ruling” meant no crime scene investigators ever looked at the scene. And again, the cause of death was multiple stab wounds placed both on the front and back of her body.

To call it strange seems too underwhelming a word, but here we are.

Who was Ellen Greenberg?

Obviously, you’ll watch all three episodes of Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg? and get to know her. Still, I wanted to set the stage for you real quick.

Ellen Greenberg was just 27 years old when her life ended very abruptly. She was a Philadelphia schoolteacher, about to celebrate her engagement at a party, and was looking forward to getting married seven months later.

Her job as a school teacher did stress her out quite a lot. In that sense, she was not in a good place. Still, everyone was shocked when she was found dead in the apartment she shared with her fiancé.

She has apparently died by her own hand on a snowy night in January 2011. The true shock, however, would be when the news broke that her suicide was now considered a homicide.

Learning that Ellen Greenberg had sustained 20 knife wounds with her body marked by 11 bruises, in various stages of healing, changed everything.

Nancy Schwartzman is the director and showrunner of this new documentary series in three parts. She previously directed Hulu’s Sasha Reid and the Midnight Order and Netflix’s equally amazing and rage-inducing Victim/Suspect.

This new true crime docuseries on Hulu & Disney+ is an ABC News Studios production. It was produced in partnership with Dakota and Elle Fanning’s Production Company, Lewellen Pictures, Lionsgate Alternative Television, and Tanbark Pictures.

Seeing just half of the first episode, I’m sure you can understand why Elle and Dakota Fanning were fascinated by this story. Watching it, I found myself getting angry on behalf of everyone who loved Ellen Greenberg.

No matter what you believe to be true, her death should have been examined thoroughly from the very beginning. The scene was so strange that I cannot for the life of me understand why any (decent) police officer wouldn’t.

Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg? is streaming on Hulu / Disney+ from September 29, 2025.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
